The Power of Sitting Still: A Quiet Lesson at Tōdai-ji Temple

This week, we are reflecting on a moment from Leo’s time in Japan that continues to shape how we move through our work and our lives. While visiting Nara, Leo had the opportunity to experience Tōdai-ji, a historic Buddhist temple that is home to the largest bronze Buddha statue in Japan. Standing in a place that has existed for centuries immediately grounded the moment, reminding us how small we are within something much larger than ourselves.

Tōdai-ji was originally constructed in the 8th century and has long served as a spiritual and cultural center for Japan. The Great Buddha, known as Daibutsu, represents peace, protection, and balance. Walking through the temple grounds, surrounded by ancient wooden structures and quiet reverence, made it clear that this space was built not for speed or productivity, but for reflection and presence.

Leo visited the temple with a close friend who is a deeply respected spiritual leader in Japan. During their time there, his friend shared a question that left a lasting impression, “Why does the Buddha sit?” The answer was simple yet profound, he does not need to move in order to enjoy his life. In that moment, surrounded by centuries of stillness, the message felt deeply personal.

Since returning home, that lesson has stayed with us. Western culture often pushes constant motion, growth, and urgency. The experience at Tōdai-ji offered a reminder that fulfillment does not always come from doing more, but from being present with what already exists. It is a practice of slowing down, breathing, and allowing life to unfold without forcing it forward.

Our work continues to be a major part of who we are, but Japan, its culture, and the lessons shared by those around Leo reinforced the importance of balance. To settle into calm, to move with intention, and to honor moments of stillness just as much as moments of action. Sometimes the most meaningful progress happens when we allow ourselves to pause.
